l1sts '@' popp1n [ TOP INSPIRATIONAL FLIX ]

"the unexamined life is not worth living." - socrates

do you ever need to feel good? do you ever need uplifting? i do. after all, i'm not made of wood. these are my favorite inspirational movies. the kind that pick you up by the bootstraps and shake you around while making you feel like anything is possible.

have fun and feel free to comment and be opinionated!

Top 5ish movies that inspire me (in no particular order): these are the movies that make me look at myself in the mirror and say 'go get em tiger!'

1) The Worlds Fastest Indian - this is the true story of a man from new zealand who comes, by himself, to the states to break the land speed record. stories like this often repeat themselves in my life. i like a story of insurmountable odds and a 'why not?' attitude. i guess the films we watch really describe the watcher more.

2) Instrument - this is documentary on the band FUGAZI, now i know not all of you know this band, but if you dodn't even like the music you need to see this. integrity is all a man has in the end.

3) The Shawshank Redemption - again the huge odds and the idea that a solid mind can get you out of anything.

4) Enemy Mine - over coming interspecies hate on a hostile planet with odd duty and family overtones. i won't say a lot more about this film, other than it makes a couple more appearances on my TOPs list.

5) The Rabbit Proof Fence - Another true story about a woman and her sister who escape colonial austrailian rule to be reunited with the people of their birth. using only the knowledge that the land and their ancestors gave them they succeed not only once, but three times. fuck the man!

6) Crumb - what can i say about this film? its the true life doc about robert crumb the underground illustrator. other than the obvious art connections i can relate to this man. his contempt for the banal, the odd family, the pencil. well... anyways check this one out.

7) Rudy - its fuckin' RUDY! (and i don't even like football.)

honorable mention (ongoing):
smoke signals
theramin
lord of the rings: the two towers

fine things find themselves finely on my shelf. the daily lack of lackadaisical lingering thoughts are over. a man like myself is on the prowl.

... enough

even the thought of failure smells faint on a day like today

"the unexamined life is not worth living." - socrates

now, i don't know who said that, but he seems like a sharp fella. the things we love, do, listen to, and examine are the very things that make us unique. now, i'll admit it, i've walked away from girls because they have bad / horrible taste in music, or even dismissed a decent person because of their inconceivable taste in popular culture. is that bad? is that good? dunno... but i do know that the amount of things i have in common with a white snake / paris hilton fan are probably very little. just a hunch or a grim tell tale? we'll see.

for now, i'm using movies. let me know what y'all think. remember these are very specific lists and in no way constitute my favorite movies of all time (yet). have fun and feel free to comment and be opinionated!

TOP '5ish' LA movies (in no particular order): movies that use my home town as a character or a backdrop in a way that seems to fit a town of this stature.

1) Colateral - LA at night is an amazing thing. i write a lot about the city at night when the sodium glow is all you need and all you see is a lone coyote on wilshire blvd. amazing.

2) Constantine - the psychic underground in los angeles. everybody knows this town has many secrets. i wonder if these are some of them.

3) Wassup Rockers? - from the west side to the east side and every skate spot in between. ever see the warriors?

4) Lords of Dogtown - the re-creation of the late 70's santa monica scene. truely the wild west of the west coast. my mom loved the movie and said it reminded her EXACTLY of the time and space. anyone who knows SaMo now knows what i mean.

5) Blade - a cold blue LA warping past you in high speed. another face to an incredibly multi-faceted town.

6) Nowhere - looking for a party? can't find it? hanging with freaks? thats a night in LA. sweet.

7) Swingers - living in LA in the mid nineties was an adventure in sillines all its own. reminds me of art school in LA and long nights of hollywood weirdness.

honorable mention (ongoing):
LA Confidential
Gone in 60 seconds
Up in Smoke
Fast and the Furious
Love and Sex
Some Kind of Wonderful
Valley Girl
Doom Generation
The Black Dahlia

ACCIDENT REPORT
happened at: 5:10 sept. 11 2007 (PST)
incident: some asshole hit me and then blamed me. he then refused to give me his info. i proceeded to get on the phone with the fuzz. his wallet and info soon appeared. as a final act of defiance he refused to state his name out loud and proceeded to call me by my middle name and ask if i was from 'around here', a 'pedro boy'.
my thoughts: what a dick.

t|-|e stra/\/ge th!ngs !n /\/\y he@d ...

the strange things in my head seem to fall out at the oddest of times. regardless of reason, regardless of rhyme. some at the market and some at the mall. you can almost hear me scream when they fall. spilling out on the floor with thud or a bounce scattering trash all around the town and the house. hmmm...

when i look up in can see the people blush and look away ...

su/\/\/\/\/\/\/\er d0gs

the summer dogs are running and i, once again, am in the pack. sirius and the star that bears his name are staring down on me from the eastern sky with the contempt of a thousand suns, each with a bar tab that i have skipped out on.

it's funny, for some reason i can't feel my feet and my eyes are clouded by the fatty water from deep within the bitterest parts of the marrow of life.
